In car chassis's it is customary to use mounts. Westfield Hayabusa rear mount. The best thing about using a bike engine is that you get the sequential gearbox from the bike which can easily be turned into paddle shift also helps alot of cars get the time under the 4 second barrier Definately try get a ride in one and possibly drive one and you'll soon be pursuaded! BGH Geartech have a similar unit. Nothing on the engine broke in the time I had it.

This gear kit went on to compete with considerable success at the famous Daytona events, Quaife's active participation in the motorcycle engined vehicle sector is also reflected in our range of gear driven ATB differential units and reversing boxes which are acknowledged to be the Quaife PowerTec Gear Drive System. Formula Student FSAE race cars, bike engined kit cars and sports car 'Limited Slip Differentials' LSD – of which there are three basic types: custom mounting carriers, inboard brakes, belt drives and electric or mechanical reverse systems.
The development of this box is way out of reach for anyone who does not design electornics for a living and so will be discussed no further here.

Fancy something different, but know nothing about which ones are best, which to avoid apart from the state off build etc, and how quick are they? Bike engines do not have reverse gear apart from the enormous Honda Goldwings.

If the solenoids were mounted to give their full throw when one pulled the other would have its actuator yanked hard and not move!

Usage is for fun, maybe a few long runs, like going abroad to the sun and twisty roads, I have had the litre sportsbikes, R1 included, have had a TVR chimaeranow just after something different, maybe look into hill climbs or sprints, dunno???

There are bolt on bits you can buy to make it stronger, clutches and so on, but a cheap disposable engine is the way to go, and a spare one in the garage! Dr Derek Doctors. To eradicate losses it is important that the gears are not permanently in mesh. If the solenoids were mounted to give their full throw when one pulled the other would have its actuator yanked hard and not move!

You put a large cog on the diff-input flange and mount a starter motor above this bolted.
You will need to fabricate the mounts from steel or aluminium depending upon the tools you have available. All of which you can and should do without.

Loads of fun, gave it beans from cold most days, thrashed it mercilessly and often with reason. A requirement for IVA and some MSA competitions is for bike engined cars to be equipped with an operating reverse system. Especially if the BEC in question was a Radical! How does a chain drive differential work?

If the solenoids were mounted to give their full throw when one pulled the other would have its actuator yanked hard and not move! Some solenoids SAAB included have retention springs inside which push the actuator shaft out normally. They also only have one brake on the axle.

This is so that when one solenoid pulls the actuator on the other springs and moves.

This is the differential assembly that we use in our Mini R1 kit. We have designed this kit for motor bike engine cars and trikes using a chain where a reverse Minimum battery requirement with charging system is a Red Top 30 or equivalent. All bike engined kit cars are generally pretty quick, and it actually The majority of BECs are 'Seven' type cars with a shaft drive to a conventional car diff., but I think Westfield XTR2's and some radicals use the same system.

I recently saw what i assume is a r1 or similar high power motorbike Caterfield 7 style car. The output from the bike gearbox is a splined output shaft. To hold the solenoids in place a bracket will be required. I've had a fair bit of experience with these things, GuinessMK's post above sums it up really.

It relies upon two reed-switches mounted on the gearshift linkage to inform the display when a gear has been changed.

You're doing a lot to the engine that it wasn't designed for so there will always be reliability issues.

It took oil and filters every 3kcarbs balanced every 2nd service and after a DynaJet kit and sausage filter, it ran like a dream. I use cheap, disposable engines, so if I blow it up, it's not the end of the world.

Meant that I could feather the throttle rather than have it as a switch. Guess if you think about it ut subjected to different forces when not in a bike. It can be mounted in 3 ways and has an extra handle position for neutral i.

    2. Overall, I would say an R1 powered car is about the same as a Caterham R, but obviously the build quality is dependent upon the builder! This is so that when one solenoid pulls the actuator on the other springs and moves.
